India conducts online courses for Sri Lanka Police

01 Feb 2021

A series of e-ITEC (Indian Technical and Economic Co-operation) training courses for Sri Lanka Police officials conducted by India commenced on 27 January, the High Commission of India said.  Due to Covid-19-related travel restrictions, a total of 10 courses are being organised online in the next month, the High Commission said, adding that the inaugural session was prominently attended by Sri Lanka Police officers including Senior DIG Priyantha Weerasooriya, Indian officers from the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), Ministry of External Affairs, and the High Commission of India, Colombo.  The High Commission added that the course has been tailor-made for the Sri Lanka Police.  “The course contents have been tailored to fulfil the requirements of Sri Lanka Police officers and designed in a way where they can have a formal interaction with the India Police to share and learn from each other’s experiences. It will enhance policing capabilities of Sri Lanka Police officers to face the modern-day challenges. Importantly, programmes would cover topics such as interrogation techniques, human trafficking, investigation of financial fraud, narcotics and psychotropic substances, intelligence and national security workshops, cybercrimes, de-radicalisation, and counterterrorism. For every course, 25 officers, ranging from ranks of Superintendent of Police, Chief Inspector of Police, Inspector of Police, and Sub-inspector of Police are nominated by the Sri Lanka Police Department.”  The High Commission further said that Sri Lanka Police officers had, in the past, been invited for training programmes in the premier police training institutions across India based on the training needs of the Sri Lanka Police Department. During 2018 and 2019, over 200 police and legal officers were trained in India in diverse topics at various institutes, and these courses were fully funded by the Government of India and have been beneficial in capacity building of Sri Lankan police officers.  India also benefits from such interaction and experience sharing with the Sri Lanka Police, the High Commission added.
