By Bhavna Mohan in New Delhi

India is prepared to work with any Prime Minister in Sri Lanka, whoever it may be, in the best interest of both countries.

Indian Foreign Ministry sources said that India’s goal was to maintain and continue to foster a strong relationship with Sri Lanka in light of the progress made so far.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous told The Sunday Morning that India was watching the present turmoil in Sri Lanka “very closely”.

India has a longstanding relationship with Sri Lanka and, as in any relationship – despite the ups and downs – India wishes to continue to work with Sri Lanka, irrespective of who leads. In addition, they believe that democracy and sovereignty will be maintained in the country.
