Indian Army Chief to visit this week

09 Oct 2021

  • Expected to meet Prez, PM, and Defence Secy
  • Gen. Naravane to witness bilateral defence exercise
By Asiri Fernando Indian Army Chief of Staff Gen. Manoj Mukund Naravane is expected to arrive in Colombo on Tuesday (12) amidst a flurry of high-profile diplomatic engagements between both countries during last week. His visit falls closely behind a four-day visit to Colombo by the Indian Foreign Secretary and will be during the same week as a visit by Indian party Rajya Sabha MP and a close friend of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Subramanian Swamy. Gen. Naravane is expected to witness the final stages of the ongoing bilateral military exercise “Mitra Shakthi” during his five-day visit. His visit to Sri Lanka comes in the wake of the reported arrests of two suspects in India due to alleged links to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and an attempt at trafficking arms and narcotics. The Indian Army Chief would meet the President, Prime Minister, and Secretary of Defence during his visit and front a press conference at the Sri Lanka Army Headquarters on Wednesday (13), the Army said. Sri Lanka and India enhanced their security and defence relationship in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday bombings of 2019, with a trilateral (India-Maldives-Sri Lanka) Secretariat on Maritime Security Co-operation established at the Sri Lanka Navy Headquarters in March this year. Both countries also discussed joint maritime patrols to counter growing concerns about trafficking networks in the Indian Ocean. India had also offered Sri Lanka a $ 50 million line of credit for capacity-building on counter-terrorism. Naravane’s visit also comes in the backdrop of significant defence reforms and restructuring in India, while questions were raised in Sri Lanka about the hike in its defence expenditure for 2022. The Sri Lanka Army also recently prepared a policy document called “Way Forward Strategy 2020-2025” outlining the future of the Army, which was not a public document up to date.
