BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the relevant officials to issue urea fertiliser, that is to be received from India, to all farmers who have cultivated paddy on the instructions of the Department of Agriculture, even if their cultivations have been harvested. Speaking to the relevant officials on Wednesday (29 June), Amaraweera said: “The department instructed farmers to cultivate paddy during the Yala cultivation season. Therefore, it is our responsibility to provide assistance to them. Hence, if the farmers need urea fertiliser, even if their cultivations have been harvested, they should be given urea fertiliser so that they can use them for certain other cultivations.” Amaraweera also instructed the officials to take steps to provide 100 kilogrammes of urea fertiliser per hectare (ha), through the Agrarian Service Centres islandwide. The fertiliser would be distributed to the centres through the Colombo Commercial Fertilisers Ltd. and Ceylon Fertiliser Company Ltd. In order to avoid issues which may arise due to the prevailing fuel shortage in the country, the Agriculture Ministry stated that Agricultural Research and Production Assistant Officers would be transferred to their native villages, if they are currently employed in other areas. Speaking to the media recently, Amaraweera said that 65,000 metric tonnes (MT) of urea fertiliser provided by the Government of India would arrive in the country in early-July, which would be used for the Yala cultivation season. He also said that the Ministry has initiated a formal programme to distribute the stock of fertiliser throughout the country as soon as the stock is received. “Out of this stock of fertiliser, 50,000 MT will be provided for paddy cultivation and the remaining 10,000 MT will be for maize cultivation. When the stock is received on 6 July, arrangements have been made to issue them to the farming community through said centres within a few days,” he said.
