Indictment filed against poet and teacher Ahnaf Jazeem

05 Nov 2021

Poet and teacher Ahnaf Jazeem's Fundamental Rights Case was taken up today (05) for fixing date of support as a digital hearing matter in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, according to a tweet by Jazeem’s attorney Sanjaya Wilson Jayasekera. Jayasekera stated that the State Counsel appearing for the Attorney General (AG) informed the Court that the AG has filed an indictment against Jazeem in the Puttalam High Court and the case will be taken up on 15 November.  It was also informed that indictment has been framed against Ahnaf under Section 2(1)(h) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). The Petitioner had filed counter objections against the 3rd Respondent's (Director, TID) limited affidavit on the 22 October.  Mr. AAM Illiyas President's Counsel appearing for Petitioner made submissions for Ahnaf and pointed to Court that poet Ahnaf is in detention for 1 ½ years now and had suffered torture, so he deserves immediate relief, and moved for 08 November for support on urgent basis, as pleaded in the motion dated 2 October.  President's Counsel informed the Court that, while the High Court case is pending, the Petitioner will proceed with the FR matter. State Counsel informed Court that 08 November is not available for Mr. Nerin Pulle, DSG. Thus, the Court fixed the matter for support on 08 December 2021, on top of the list. Justice S.Thurairaja PC, chairing, informed also that Justice Janak de Silva will recuse from hearing the FR matter as the Justice was formerly a member of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry probing the Easter Sunday terror attacks.
