Indonesia says death toll from earthquake over 250
Indonesian authorities announced the figure of deaths caused by 7 magnitude earthquake in tourist island of Lombok own West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province has reached 259 as of Thursday afternoon, feared to increase further as many were still trapped under the rubbles, coupled with unreported burials of the deaths.
The figure was far higher than 131 announced on Wednesday.
The latest data on those affected by the powerful earthquake was resulted from a data consolidation meeting attended by representatives of Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), military, police, Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) conducted in the main rescue team command post located in North Lombok regency’s district of Tanjung in the afternoon.
The most devastated area of North Lombok regency identified as the area has the most deaths at 212, according to the latest data.
BNPB Spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said 1,033 ones sustaining major injuries from the earthquake have now been treated in several hospitals in Lombok.
Figure of the displaced ones has risen to 270,168 ones, sheltered in various locations in the affected areas.
Sutopo said efforts to retrieve those trapped under debris of collapsed construction have been intensified at present with more deployment of heavy duty vehicles would be mobilized to the most affected areas in the next days.
Currently the efforts were supported by 21 heavy duty vehicles from various types, he added.
Distribution of supplies for the displaced ones has also been intensified, highly expected of capable to reach the areas isolated by the earthquake.
Provincial office issued the deaths figure from the powerful earthquake at 381ones on Wednesday, demanding central government to declare Lombok earthquake as a national disaster that consequently requires national mitigation efforts commanded by central government.
Apart from the data update on those affected by the Lombok earthquake, Sutopo said that the fresh 6.2 aftershock that occurred on Thursday noon in Lombok has injured 24 ones.
He said that the aftershocks that followed the 7 magnitude earthquake were recorded at 362 until now with 18 of them were significantly felt. (Courtesy Asia Pacific Daily)
