o Airline and airport staff cleared  Melbourne flight to land today By Maheesha Mudugamuwa With the report of a Covid-19-positive passenger among Sri Lankan repatriates brought back to the country from Dubai last week, concerns have been raised over the safety of the staff of SriLankan Airlines and the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Anil Jasinghe confirmed that there was a Covid-19- positive passenger on board the aircraft that returned from Dubai on Thursday (7) morning. The UL 303 aircraft that returned to the country on Thursday repatriated 197 passengers including Sri Lankan expatriates living in Dubai. One individual among the passengers had displayed symptoms of Covid-19, following the tests conducted at BIA, and was thereafter admitted to the Negombo General Hospital. Later, it was confirmed that the individual had contracted the virus, and the patient was then transferred to the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH). However, when asked about the safety of the staff of SriLankan Airlines and the BIA, Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. (AASL) Chairman Maj. Gen. (Retd.) G.A. Chandrasiri noted that staff members were safe and had been cleared by the health officials. He told The Sunday Morning that a special health team from the Ministry of Health arrived at the airport soon after the passenger was detected positive for Covid-19 and they conducted the necessary health checkups for the entire SriLankan and BIA staff that dealt with all the passengers. “The health authorities cleared our staff and they are safe,” Maj. Gen. Chandrasiri said, adding that the issue was with around 197 passengers who flew together with the Covid-19-positive passenger. The entire staff is well equipped with the necessary protection needed to prevent them from being exposed to the virus and the BIA is adopting World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, he noted. “The Sri Lanka Army is adopting a separate mechanism to quarantine all passengers,” he said. According to Maj. Gen. Chandrasiri, Sri Lankans in Melbourne will be brought back to the country today on a special SriLankan flight. By Maheesha Mudugamuwa
