Inflation increased in October

24 Nov 2021

The National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) increased to 8.3% in October 2021, the Statistics Department of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) announced. Accordingly, the increase took place from 6.2% in September 2021 with the NCPI monthly change of 2.12% in October 2021. This was driven by monthly increases of prices of items in both “food” as well as “non-food” categories.  When it comes to food inflation, it has increased to 11.7% Year-onYear (YoY) in October 2021 from 10% in September 2021. Meanwhile, non-food inflation also increased to 5.4% (YoY) in October 2021 from 3% in September 2021. The NCPI, measured on an annual average basis, increased to 5.7% in October 2021 from 5.5% in September 2021. These increases were observed in prices of items in both food and non-food categories, which were 0.89% and 1.23%, respectively. Accordingly, within the food category, prices of milk powder and rice increased. Further, prices of items in the non-food category recorded increases mainly due to price increases observed in housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels (LP gas and materials for the maintenance); restaurant and hotels; miscellaneous goods and services; and health sub-categories during the month, the CBSL explained.
