The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is to decide on the installation of three new cranes at the Colombo Port.
SLPA Acting Vice Chairman and Managing Director W.S. Weeraman told The Morning that a decision would be taken after much deliberation.
“Our top-level management has been discussing this issue since the cranes arrived at the port earlier this month. I think a decision will be taken on Tuesday (yesterday, 30),” he said.
He said the issue lay with the ownership of the East Container Terminal still being with India and Japan.
“We want to install the cranes at the JC (Jaya Container) Terminal, but these arrived at the East (Container) Terminal. Due to a Memorandum of Corporation of the previous Government, the ownership of the East (Container) Terminal comes under Japan and India. Therefore, we have to circumvent this issue if we are to install the cranes at the JC Terminal,”
The three cranes are reportedly worth an estimated $ 25 million.
