Meanwhile Youth and Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa told media last week that he would be compelled to appoint an interim committee to run the affairs of Sri Lanka’ cricket if the present disappointing situation is to worsen in future. National cricket administration in both India and South Africa are currently run by interim administrations. * CA=Competent Authority Another source who is involved in the ongoing SLC election campaign, said there is a big possibility for the Minister to appoint an interim committee due to the “bitter confrontations” that are expected in the next SLC elections, coming up in less than four months. Our effort to contact Anuradha Wijekoon, Secretary to the Ministry of Youth and Sports in this regard failed yesterday. Meanwhile it is also reported that the national Cricket Committee, appointed with the consent of both the Ministry and SLC, and consisting Aravinda de Silva, Roshan Mahanama, Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan, is also to recommend that there should be a change in the existing club voting system which tends to form a body that is prone for bribery and corruption. They are also likely to propose a more competitive first-class tournament format plus a strong provincial competition. “There is a strong speculation going on at the moment that the Honourable Minister is likely to appoint an interim body of administrators by considering the present situation in our cricket,” the said probable contender for a top SLC post conceded yesterday on the condition of anonymity. Anyway, rival parties have already begun their election campaigns by yesterday. Many historically rival factions have got together against the present SLC administration to challenge them in a united front if the elections are to be held in May.
