[caption id="attachment_118777" align="alignnone" width="1023"] Interim committees are not always foolproof and are against democratic principles. Here are two bigwigs of the 2009-11 SLC interim committee, its President Somachandra de Silva (right) and Secretary Nishantha Ranatunga (second right) talking to two former players Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan[/caption] In response to our back-page lead news story on Tuesday yesterday (9), Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) senior official said that having an interim committee for cricket administration will be a violation of democratic principles that are binding local cricket administration. “The option of an interim is a tactic used by some of our rival parties who know that they are unable to come to power through a proper election. Appointing an interim committee is a violation of the democratic rights of our (SLC’s) stakeholders,” a senior SLC ex-co member said. Developing infrastructure “We have been developing infrastructure of our member clubs. Grounds are being built in places like Ambalangoda, which is a long overdue facility for the area. We don’t have to bribe our member clubs to get votes. We win because we work,” he elaborated. There was strong speculation emerging early this week that the Government authorities would appoint an interim committee to run the SLC affairs amidst growing criticism that the elected body, now under Shammi Silva, has caused the national game to slide drastically in recent times. Interim Head directs money to “his bank” He also said that interim committees too have had their shortcomings and are not overtly serene institutions. “A former Head of an interim committee diverted TV rights money that the cricket board received to a leading bank where he held a high position,” remarked the said SLC official disapproving the fact that the interims are always foolproof. “Also the ICC (the International Cricket Council) won’t simply take such a measure lightly. They always consider such appointments as governmental interventions on a national cricket administration,” he further added. The next SLC election is scheduled to be held on 20 May. Traditionally rival parties have got together to form one single alliance against the present SLC administration, it is reliably learnt.
