Intermediate Covid centres for FTZ workers

26 May 2021

By Dinitha Rathnayake   The Board of Investment (BOI) has decided to set up intermediate treatment centres for free trade zone (FTZ) employees infected with Covid-19 with the assistance of the private sector in response to the spread of the virus. The first treatment centre of the programme has been established in the Katunayake FTZ. With the support of the National Youth Services Council, 300 beds were handed over to the said treatment centre by Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga. State Minister of Aviation and Export Zones Development D.V. Chanaka said that employees in the export zones are facing a high risk of contracting the virus. “This is the main reason to provide such a facility with the assistance of the private sector.” Small Covid-19 clusters have begun to emerge in garment factories recently, with factories in the Katunayake, Koggala, and Thulhiriya FTZs among the most affected. Factories in Wathupitiwala, Norwood, and Pallekele are also reported to be affected, according to Public Health Inspectors’ (PHI) Union Secretary M. Balasooriya.
