The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) in a statement on Friday (23) urged the Parliament of Sri Lanka to reject the “impunity resolution” which was tabled by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, stating that it would interfere with the judiciary and the Attorney General's (AG’s) Department.
“The Parliament should categorically reject this ‘immunity resolution’ that interferes with the ongoing work of the judiciary and the Attorney General’s office in their efforts to provide for at least a modicum of accountability for serious violations,” the statement read.
The resolution seeking to implement recommendations of the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) to investigate and inquire into alleged political victimisations between 8 January 2015 and 16 November 2019 was tabled in Parliament by Rajapaksa on 9 April.
The ICJ’s statement also pointed out that recommendations of the PCoI interfere with the independent functioning of the judiciary since it allows for the reassessment of court proceedings outside the judicial structure.
“People in distant villages do not even have proper toilet facilities and medicinal facilities. Villagers are embedded in debt and conflict with wild animals. We will not stop the battle against this band of robbers because of those people,” Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament with regard to the resolution on Friday (23).
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) in a statement earlier this month said that it was deeply concerned about the recommendations of the Commission to withdraw ongoing criminal cases.
