08 Sep 2019

An international summit held last week saw the participation of Sri Lanka to promote peace around the world. The 2019 HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light) World Peace Summit was held in over 130 locations in 87 countries including Sri Lanka, South Korea, France, Australia, Russia, India, Zambia, and the US. The summit was held in co-operation with an international peace NGO named HWPL and international actors – civil society organisations and governments. In Sri Lanka, HWPL hosted the “Legislate Peace” campaign with the National Youth Services Council, affiliated with the Ministries of National Policies and Economic Affairs, Resettlement and Rehabilitation, Northern Province Development, and Youth Affairs and Vocational Training and Skills Development of Sri Lanka. The Legislate Peace campaign is a global peace advocacy movement which aims to bring all wars to an end and promote peace as a culture by establishing an enforceable law compatible with the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW). Over 1.5 million people from 195 countries participated in the campaign presenting the progress of the “Peace Letter” campaign, as a part of the Legislate Peace project. Under the theme of “Legislate Peace – Implementation of the DPCW for Sustainable Development”, the event announced the results of the campaign in Sri Lanka. President Maithripala Sirisena sent a note to the summit saying he supports every effort that DPCW makes to spread peace around the world and bring about true world peace. The host organisation, HWPL is an NGO associated with the UN Department of Global Communications and in special consultative status with the UN ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council). This year’s event marks its fifth anniversary of the WARP (World Alliance of Religious’ Peace) Summit.
