By Tharindu Chaturanga The investigations report on the controversy over the expensive chairs purchased by the Western Provincial Council (WPC) has been handed over to the WPC Governor Hemakumara Nanayakkara. A spokesperson for the Governor told The Morning that the Governor will need some time and space to study the report and will then make a statement. JVP Provincial Councillor Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi had recently said that 125 chairs, each costing Rs 640,000, had been ordered from abroad for the chamber of the new Western Provincial Council building in Battaramulla. The JVP member had sought the intervention of the Governor of the Western Province to reverse the decision. Following the request made by the JVP councillor, the Governor temporarily suspended the purchase of the 125 chairs and appointed a five-member committee to investigate the matter. The committee has handed over the report to WPC Secretary Pradeep Yasarathne. At a recent public meeting, Western Province Chief Minister Isura Devapriya defended the decision to purchase expensive chairs for council. The Chief Minister said that the newly-constructed provincial council building is a 15-storey building with modern facilities which will also require modern chairs.
