25 Aug 2021

  • Cites ‘inability to commit’ to council activities
By Dinitha Rathnayake National Youth Services Council (NYSC) Director Board Member Iraj Weeraratne has resigned from his post on the NYSC, citing unavoidable prior work-related commitments. Weeraratne stated this in his resignation letter addressed to Minister of Youth and Sports, and Development Co-ordination and Monitoring and State Minister of Digital Technology and Enterprise Development Namal Rajapaksa. In the letter, Weeraratne has stated that he wishes to devote more time to his personal and professional activities, and that he is resigning due to his inability to commit to the activities of the NYSC. Weeraratne was appointed as a member of the NYSC’s Board of Directors last year by Rajapaksa, stating that the relevant appointment would be valid for a period of three years, or until further notice, from 19 August 2020 onwards. Rajapaksa, on 18 August 2020, also appointed Tehani Imara as a member of the NYSC’s Board of Directors. In an interview with The Morning last year, Weeraratne said: “I was appointed as a member of the NYSC’s Board and my role primarily entails developing, promoting, and creating easy access to digital and social media for rural youth. I firmly believe that if we encourage our youth to engage more with digital and social media, we can create a network of young digital entrepreneurs. Today, if a young person has access to social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, they can generate an income while working from their homes.”
