Is wellness done well?

26 Oct 2019

“Corporate wellness” is another one of those trending topics within the business world – the feel-good buzzwords that represent the intervention of employers in improving the overall health of their employees. While the topic has been around for a while, the last few years have seen a massive shift across the world in “corporate wellness” initiatives and has even given rise to an all new industry of companies that design and manage such programmes. In Sri Lanka, as in most corporate settings, it is the companies with larger employee numbers that adopt workplace wellness initiatives – the desired outcomes being improved productivity, better engagement, less absenteeism, and reduced medical expense. The argument for corporate wellness programmes is that better health, wellness, and balance lead to high-performance workforces; that positive energy leads to happy people who make for better business. That’s why “workplace wellness” is no longer a nice-to-have, but a must-have – treating it as a tickbox fulfilment means the desired outcomes will naturally be under par. Wellness programmes that take the form of one-off screenings, a few presentations, or some random incentives are, while a step in the right direction, not exactly of great long-term impact. There is a myopic tendency to view wellness merely from the lens of physical fitness and healthy eating. The “wellness” of a human entails many more aspects – emotional and spiritual, social and environmental, and occupational and intellectual. A company that has truly embedded a culture of wellness will address all these aspects. For example, a campaign that targets smoking must also evaluate the impact workplace stresses may have on levels of smoking; it will have little effect if it doesn’t also address the root cause of the stress. That’s where change in workplace culture comes in. Where corporate wellness also tends to fail is the one-size-fits-all approach that such programmes take. Each individual employee responds differently to the many types of wellness initiatives on offer – some may be more athletically inclined while food discipline comes easier to others; some others would enjoy meditation while there’d be a set of employees who revel in social activities. Focusing only on one type of wellness may have quite the opposite effect, even to the point of humiliating those who make no progress. While scientific evidence draws a correlation between employee wellness and high-performance cultures, there are plenty of real-life examples of obese, smoking, unfit, anxiety-prone employees who also perform at their full potential. But bad habits and poor wellness take a toll over time – if not professionally, then most certainly personally. The greater the overall wellness, the greater one’s ability to sustain peak performance – mentally, spiritually, and physically. Of course, that’s not to suggest that every day will be a great one; everyone has their bad days in today’s corporate environment, but true wellness prepares employees to manage stress, resist burnout, and flourish under pressure. In the final equation, true wellness is a state of mind. Corporates need their employees to create and innovate; functions that thrive where employees feel free and happy. Employees who feel appreciated and empowered, and confident of their value and influence within the company automatically feel better about themselves and contribute more. That’s why wellness must become intrinsic to a company’s corporate culture, and must be approached from a holistic point of view. The pitfalls of force feeding ill-designed wellness initiatives of narrow scope are many; they may largely be a waste of everyone’s time and effort.
