Islandwide nurses to protest today

  • Claims demands unmet over allowances and facilities 
BY Dinitha Rathnayake Health sector trade unions are to stage a protest in 1,100 hospitals today (22) over unmet demands concerning various allowances and the provision of essential facilities, according to Government Nursing Officers’ Association (GNOA) President Saman Rathnapriya.  Speaking to The Morning, he said that the protest would take place between 12 noon and 1 p.m. with the participation of 100,000 health staff. “Besides doctors, every staff member who represents the health sector would participate in this protest.” According to Rathnapriya, the main issues they are facing at the moment concern Covid-19-related allowances and facilities, overtime (OT) allowances, transportation, N-95 masks, and meals. “The present Government didn’t provide any of these facilities yet, and therefore, we have to spend around Rs. 1,500 daily just to fulfil our transport requirement.” Meanwhile, he also said that while there are around 12,000 nursing vacancies, 600 minor staff vacancies, 700 x-ray technician vacancies, and 550 clerk vacancies to be filled, the Government has not made any attempt to fulfil the requirement. Health trade unions staged several protests recently against the Government and one was conducted over the failure of the authorities to publish the gazette notification pertaining to the promotions of nursing officers. Following the protest action, a Cabinet paper was submitted with regard to promotions in the nursing service, which was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers; and accordingly, it was forwarded to the Public Administration Ministry and the Public Service Commission.
