ITAK slams northern casteism as government canard

BY Dinitha Rathnayake The Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) has rejected allegations of casteism levelled by activists in the Northern Province and said that casteism is made up by parties aligned to the Government to create disruptions within the Tamil community. Speaking to The Morning, ITAK MP Shanakiyan Rajaputhiran Rasamanickam said that the parties who create such issues are government allies, and that they do it for the requirement of the Government. “There are no issues among the Tamil community. These are just attempts made by several parties to grab attention and create such problems among the society,” he claimed. He also said there is no trouble for children of any caste to attend school, as the schools belong to the Government. “Maybe some people have issues attending Hindu temples (kovils), because some temples belong to families in Jaffna and are mostly attended by family members. We as politicians have no such issues, and we are there to address anyone’s issue.” However, activists in the Northern Province allege that various acts of discrimination and harassment, including of a verbal (use of slurs) and sexual (not allowing women to cover their upper body region) nature, which are due to casteism practised by so-called high-caste Hindus, have made daily life increasingly difficult for those occupying the so-called lower rungs of the caste hierarchy, including through the denial of access to basic facilities such as water and the prohibition of entry to kovils, schools, and the Parliament.
