Italy to assist with waste-to-energy programme

29 Sep 2020

By Sarah Hannan The Italian Government has extended its support to launch a waste-to-energy project in collaboration with Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Power. During a recent discussion with Minister of Power Dullas Alahapperuma, Italian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Rita Mannella emphasised that this initiative could make a huge contribution to the power system of Sri Lanka by generating electricity using waste, thereby giving commercial value to waste. She also noted that the Government of Italy is looking forward to rendering its support to the Government of Sri Lanka in this regard. “Sri Lanka’s power sector is now moving towards cheaper renewable sources. It would be more appropriate to try alternative energy sources such as garbage, and there is potential for investment from Italy in this regard,” Alahapperuma said. Alahapperuma expressed his gratitude to the Italian Ambassador for coming forward to support such a project as a solution to the problem of waste management, which is a major issue in many countries at present, including in Sri Lanka. The Minister also emphasised that the process of generating electricity using waste could be more beneficial to Sri Lanka as the Government of Sri Lanka should give priority to sustainable energy in line with the President's “Vision for Prosperity”. “If there is a timely solution to the legal and social framework as well as the power sector in the country, it is important to educate the relevant sectors on the issue of electricity generation using waste as a method that can contribute to the development of the country, giving some economic value to this waste problem which has caused a great deal of pollution as well as environmental pollution,” explained Alahapperuma. Further stating that steps will be taken to start the process of generating electricity using waste materials as a solution for waste management as well.
