By Kusumanjalee Thilakarathna PHOTOS © SAMEERA WIJESINGHE  Jaanvi Apsaari Abeywardhane is a young actress who has experience in acting in teledramas and movies. She wishes to study acting as she wants to improve her acting skills. But she says her ambition is not to become a full-time actress. She dreams of becoming a vet so that she can nurse sick animals back to health. Jaanvi Apsaari is only 10 years old.   Q: Jaanvi, can you tell us more about yourself? A: I live in Minuwangoda and I am studying in Seelawimala Maha Vidyalaya, Minuwangoda. I am in grade six now. My birthday falls on October 25. I have an older sister. Her name is Lithuli and she is 12 years old now. We live with our parents.  I love to play cricket with my father. He used to be a cricketer. I like both batting and bowling. I like to ride my bicycle, dance, sing, and also study. My most favourite thing is to dance.    Q: Tell us about your acting career. A: I started acting when I was only two and a half years old. That was for a music video. I first acted in a teledrama when I was four years old. So far I have acted in four music videos, 14 teledramas, four films, three short films, and some documentaries. My latest film ‘Papa’s House’ is yet to be screened. The other three – ‘Sari Gappi’, ‘A-Level’, and ‘Hath Pethi Mala’ – became very popular, especially the film ‘A-Level’ because it talks about something really important which is children’s safety.  Q: What is your favourite among all these productions? A: I enjoyed being a part of all of them. I learnt a lot of new things during the shooting of ‘Mihikathata Husmak’ which was a documentary on wildlife. It was done by ITN and the wildlife department.    Q: Do you have any unforgettable experiences you would like to share with us? A: Well, there was this incident where a wild elephant chased our vehicle when we were shooting in Minneriya. My mother got really scared. I don’t think I was scared. I was mesmerised by how majestic the elephant looked.    Q: Who helps you to prepare for the different roles that you play? A: Mainly my mother and father. We read the script together and try to understand what kind of characteristics my role has to have. Then if it’s something that I don’t know, Amma and Thaththa teach me how to do that.   Q: If you are to pick any role for yourself, what would that be? A: I like to play the role of a girl who is visually impaired. I have thought about how they manage their day-to-day work. If I get a chance to play the role of a blind girl, I think I will be successful.    Q: What is your favourite movie/cartoon? A: Oh, there is a lot that I really love. I can’t pick just one.   Q: What is your ambition? A: I would love to become a vet and help sick and innocent animals.    Q: Do you have any pets at home Jaanvi? A: I have four pets – two cats and two dogs.  My two cats are Chooty and Covishi. Chooty is black and white. Covishi is grey and white. We found Covishi during the pandemic lockdown. She was just a kitten and we decided to adopt her.  My two dogs are Rosie and Brown. Rosie is a cream-coloured doggie and you can guess what colour Brown is.  I love them a lot. I play with them all the time and there are times when my mother warns me to be careful. She says that we have to be very careful when we handle animals.    Q: Do you study dancing and music? A: I do study dancing. I attend a class and I study dancing at school too. I love the western styles and would love to learn traditional dance methods too. I have been studying dancing since I was in the nursery.  I don’t go to any music classes. I just love to sing. I think I developed this habit because of my sister. She is a really good singer. We love to sing together.    Q: Do you play any sports other than cricket? A: Yes. I recently started karate. I had to wait for a long time to start practising due to the pandemic.    Q: Is there anyone you want to thank for supporting you? A: Well, mainly my family. They always support me. I want to thank all my teachers and my principal sir Ruwan Mapa Pathithara. My class teacher is Miss Harshika. I also want to thank uncle Chamara Samarawickrama and Saddha Mangala Suriyabandara. I received the opportunity to act thanks to them.
