Jaswar Umar’s tenure as FFSL President has been extended by 10 days

  • Jaswar’s reign extended for 10 days
By Ranjika Perera    The Ministry of Sports and National Sports Council (NSC) have approved a 10-day extension period for Jaswar Umar’s tenure as President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL).    The relevant period of the current administration under President Umar, which was appointed for a period of one year, was scheduled to end on 31 May 2022. But the current football administration was allowed to continue for three more months under the gazette issued by the Ministry of Sports to extend the term of office.    The three-month period was given to ensure sufficient time to prepare for elections. However, Umar and co. seemingly showed no intention of conducting an official election during this period. The given extension came to an end yesterday (31 August) and the current administration was to be abolished and the federation transferred to the purview of the Ministry of Sports.   Despite the enormous backlash from various parties involved in the sport, President Umar has been granted another 10-day extension by the Ministry. These 10 days have been granted so that with the arrival of officers from FIFA next week, the FFSL can conduct the relevant discussions and set a date for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) followed by the election.    Umar, speaking exclusively to The Morning Sports, said: “We only requested for a 10-day extension and they have agreed to it. The sole reason behind it is due to the arrival of the FIFA delegation on 5 September, and since all discussions happened under my administration, they want to finish off what we started. Once the discussions are done we will hopefully be able to set a date for the elections.”
