Former Master Blaster Sanath Jayasuriya joined the public protests, requesting the ouster of the present President and the Government, on Saturday (16).
“It is unfortunate that the people are going through this situation. They cannot survive like this and have started to protest. There is a shortage of gas and no electricity supply for hours. People have started to come out and protest to show the Sri Lankan Govt. that they are suffering. If relevant people don’t address this properly, it will turn into a disaster. At the moment the responsibility will go to the present Govt,” Jayasuriya has told the Indian media over his action.
Jayasuriya notably was part of the 2010-15 Mahinda Rajapaksa Govt., once holding one of its deputy ministerial portfolios, after entering parliament from Matara. After the fall of that Govt. in January 2015, he joined the ‘Yahapalana’ coalition Govt. and held the portfolio of Deputy Minister of Local Government for about five months.
A salient request by the Galle Face protestors is complete rejection of 225 members of Parliament from the present lot and a complete overhaul of the existing political system in the country.
