Dr. Chandima Jeevandara, Head of the Department of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, said that tests will be conducted today (27) to find out whether different mutated COVID strands that are found in different parts of the world are spreading in Sri Lanka as well. He says that a special PCR kit imported for this purpose was received in Sri Lanka yesterday (26).
The study identifies five different strains of the virus that are prevalent in several countries around the world. In addition, tests to identify all specific viruses that are prevalent in Sri Lanka will begin today (27), he said, adding that the results of all these tests will be released this week. He also said that all the facilities and samples required for the tests have been prepared.
The Medical Faculty of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura states that a special investigation team headed by Dr. Chandima Jeewandara is preparing for the tests and that the final reports of the tests will be handed over to the Director General of Health Services as soon as the tests are completed.
