St Joseph’s College beat Kingswood College by 34 points to three in the curtain raiser of the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2022 at the Havelock Park yesterday (23).
The Joes got off to an ideal start with skipper Teran Karunanaayaka scoring the opening try. The forwards did the hard work and once the ball was sent to the skipper, he stepped on the gas that burst through. The Joes’ second try came in the 12th minute when Naveen Marasinghe barged in through the middle to score under the post. Both tries were converted by Dilhara Subash.
The Josephians kept on the attack and they found the third try when Isuru Kanchana burst down the line from his own half. Unfortunately, Kanchana sprained his hamstring and had to be taken out of play. Beyond that point, the Joes wasted opportunities and they were down to 13 when Isuru Kanchana and Sachinthana Vidyana were given the marching orders. Despite having the advantage, Kingswood only managed to add three points before the break.
Second half was a stop start replay as both teams struggled with consistency. Kingswood couldn’t help themselves either when they were down to 14 in the 45th minute. However, the Joes found their mojo towards the last quarter and added two more tries to secure the bonus point. Half-back Vihanga Randeepa scored first, with a sizzling run through traffic. The final try was scored by Sithija Sanjeewa to seal a comfortable win.
