Joes favourites as Saints lock horns for the 88th BOTS

13 Jul 2022

By Ranjika Perera The 88th Battle of the Saints (BOTS) between St. Joseph’s College and St. Peter’s College that was scheduled to take place today (14) at the P. Sara Oval has been postponed indefinitely. The Rev. Fr. Maurice Le Goc trophy has been with the Peterites since 2016, which the Joesphians will be determined to take back this year.  These two of the more prestigious Catholic schools in the country were waiting to get the chance to fight it out on the field, to earn the bragging rights between the two schools.  St. Joseph’s College leads the series tally with 12 wins, their last win coming under the captaincy of Ruwantha Fernandopulle in 2008, while St. Peter’s College were the winners of the 2016 encounter under Vinu Mohotty, bringing their tally to 10 wins. The Josephians have been denied victories despite having strong teams in the recent past, as the Peterites have had a tight grip on the trophy for more than a decade.  This year, St. Joseph’s College will be led by Sri Lanka U-19 National Cap Shevon Daniel. The powerful top-order batsman will be determined to take back the trophy to Darley Road. St Peter’s College will be led by Sri Lankan U-19 cap Wanuja Sahan. The left arm orthodox spinner will have a big responsibility on his shoulders to make sure his players bring out their best game against their strong opponents.  In the recently concluded U-19 Limited Overs Tournament organised by the Sri Lanka School Cricket Association, both teams were crowned champions in their respective tiers. St. Joseph’s College were crowned champions in Tier A, while St Peter’s College won the Tier B championship.  The Josephians will be favourites to get a positive result this time around. The likes of Shevon Daniel and his U-19 national teammate Sadeesh Jayawardane, will be determined to put their experience to good use. They will also be boosted with the presence of Sri Lankan National Cap Dunith Wellalage. This will be Wellalage’s final year playing for the school, as he was fortunately released from the Test squad for the Pakistan series.  For the Peterites, Skipper Wanuja Sahan and left arm seamer Danal Hemananda will lead the charge with the ball. Both players have experience playing for the U-19 national team, while Sahan was a part of the U-19 World Cup squad last year. Their batting department will heavily depend on wicketkeeper-batter Lahiru Dawatage. He also boasts U-19 National experience.
