Joint committee for restructuring Excise Department

Prime Minister (PM) Mahinda Rajapaksa called for the appointment of a joint committee to restructure the Excise Department of Sri Lanka. The PM stated this at a meeting held on Wednesday (30 September) at Temple Trees with trade union representatives to discuss the issues of excise officers. During the meeting, the PM drew attention to the professional issues of the excise officers and instructed the department to immediately stop the transfer of excise officers due to political pressure and to transfer only qualified officers. Accordingly, steps should be taken to transfer the excise officers working in the beneficiary areas according to the transfer procedure in due course, the PM said. Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando, PM’s Secretary Gamini Senarath, Additional Secretary to the PM Attorney-at-Law Chaminda Kularatne, Department of Management Services Director General Hiransa Kaluthanthri, Commissioner General of Excise A. Bodaragama, Association of Chief Inspectors of Excise and Excise Inspectors Chief President Nimalsiri Hemantha, Association of Excise Inspectors General Secretary Tissa Rajapaksa, and Sri Lanka Graduate Excise Officers Association Chief President Chinthaka Udapamuna, among others, were also present at the occasion.
