J’pura Uni tyre incident: 5 suspects given bail

By Agra Ranasinghe Five of the six suspects arrested in connection with the tractor tyre incident at Sri Jayewardenepura University where a student was critically injured, have been granted bail, according to Mirihana Inspector of Police (IP) Kaan Weerasinghe. Gangodawila Magistrate M.M.M. Nihal had granted bail to the five suspects a few days ago and the Mirihana Police are conducting further investigations. However, the main suspect has not been granted bail. Meanwhile, the student who was injured in the incident that took place in early March, Pasindu Hirushan, is regaining consciousness, The Sunday Morning learnt. Pasindu's brother, Lakshan Silva told us that the doctors who treat him said that he regained consciousness and responds to certain instructions by raising his hands as well as opening and closing his eyes. He is surviving on liquid foods. On 29 March, The Sunday Morning reported that the right side of his body was paralysed after a tyre had been thrown in his direction after a party held for first-year students of the University on 5 March. He had been completely unconscious until a few days ago, and the Government offered to take him overseas for treatment. However, due to the Covid-19 situation, Pasindu will not be taken to another country for further treatment, said his brother.
