Judicial officer for COPE

By Skandha Gunasekara Chairman of the parliamentary watchdog body, the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE), MP Sunil Handunnetti, has made a request from Parliament to allow a judicial officer to be present during COPE sittings in an observational capacity. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, MP Handunnetti explained that the presence of a judicial officer would assist with legal proceedings pertaining to matters probed by COPE. “I have proposed that a judicial officer also be a part of COPE sittings. This way, the judicial officer can report back to the judiciary or the Attorney General’s Department regarding any legal action that could be initiated pertaining to cases we investigate,” he said, adding that it would help expedite legal proceedings. He said that he made the request from Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya as well. “I have made the request to the Speaker; now, it is up to him and Parliament to take a decision,” he said.
