Justice Ministry withdraws Obscene Publications Bill extraordinary gazette

The Ministry of Justice has decided to withdraw the extraordinary gazette publication of the Obscene Publications Bill and to hold consultations with stakeholders including the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and civil society groups who has expressed concern. This was made known via a media release from the Ministry of Justice today (29). The statement reveals that such a decision was made based on the concerns raised by the civil society groups who has expressed concern and have stated that such a bill would hamper many creative artists and their industries. Due to this reason, the Ministry of Justice has announced that the previously implemented Obscene Publications Bill extraordinary gazette will now be revoked, and the proposal to revise the bill would be revisited and revised if necessary.
