Further to the Indian Foreign Secretary’s visit to the Trincomalee Oil Tank Farm last weekend, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayaka explained in detail as to why the extension of the agreement between the Indian Oil Company and the Trincomalee Oil Farm would be considered as "illegal". "The Ministry of Energy, robed in a patriotic veil, presented the proposal to the cabinet a few weeks ago requesting the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Act 28 of 1961 to be amended. According to the current legislation, Sri Lanka's fuel market cannot be opened to foreign corporations. If they are to make for it, the Act must be amended. Therefore, the proposal suggests for suitable entities to be granted approval by the cabinet and empower the subject minister to allow supply cleaning, mixing, distribution of petrol, diesel and kerosene oil along with other alternative fuels. If this amendment is not done, the IOC will not gain any benefit from owning the Trincomalee oil tank farm." said Dissanayaka. Additionally, he went on to say that certain sectors are being taken over by the Americans, some by the Chinese and the remaining left for India, further mentioning that the take over of national assets and economic hubs by such "super powers" would only cripple Sri Lanka further.
