JVP questions formation of new gas company

26 Sep 2021

The Ceolit gas company initiated by a committee led by the Secretary to the President P B Jayasundara and the Finance Secretary has come under Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) fire. Several questions, including whether cabinet approval was given for the establishment of this company were raised. "We heard that a new gas company had been formed called Ceolit. It was formed by the committee appointed by the Government. This company has been established along with the Litro gas company to give a monopoly to the Laugfs gas company which is already suffering losses and is endebted largely to the Bank of Ceylon and the Peoples Bank. Was cabinet approval given for this company to be established? The board of directors had met online twice and never face to face. It was proposed that the company brand be renamed using the word 'Sri Lanka' to garner international attraction. Who approved this? How was a private firm established under the name Ceolit. How was a company formed when it was only an appointment of a committee?” JVP member Sunil Handunnetti remarked. Handunnetti made these statements at a Media brief held yesterday (25). The committee led by Jayasundara was appointed to sort out the shortage of gas in the country which erupted few months ago. Whereas, the formation of a new company has left questions unanswered. The shortage of gas arose in the country, following multiple requests to increase the prices due to the Sri Lankan Rupee depreciation. With a shortage of Laugfs gas cylinders, the Government permitted the hike in the price of Gas. The price of the 12.5kg cylinder rose by Rs 363 and the 5kg cylinder rose by Rs145. Only Laugfs gas was allowed to raise the price, whereas Laugfs gas was unable to meet the demand of the people, and the shortage continued.
