JVP says it won't attend meeting called by PM

01 May 2020

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka has announced that the JVP will not attend the meeting called by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuses the current situation in the country. Rajapaksa had yesterday (30) extended an invitation to the 225 former MPs to attend a meeting at the Temple Trees next Monday (4). However, the exact reason as to why the meeting was called is unclear. Dissanayaka in a letter addressed to Rajapaksa today (1) said the government would not be able to find a solution to the impending constitutional crisis by convening a meeting with 225 MPs of the old parliament. He said if the government wanted to address the impending constitutional crisis it would either have to reconvene Parliament or seek advice from the Supreme Court. Dissanayaka added that if the government wanted to discuss about relief measures to the public it rather call a Party Leaders' meeting.
