JVP suspects hidden agenda behind AG's move

16 Jan 2020

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today questioned the Attorney General's(AG) move against the tabling of the Central Bank  Forensic Audit reports in Parliament. JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake at a press conference today(16) said there was no plausible reason for the AG to request Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to refrain from tabling the reports. On the first Parliamentary session of the year, the Speaker revealed that the AG had informed in writing to refrain from releasing the forensic reports as it would jeopardize ongoing legal proceedings in connection with the Central Bank bond scam. Rathnayake said many reports of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) and Presidential Commissions inquiring into corruption and malpractices had been released without objections of the AG in the past. "Why is the AG objecting to the release of the forensic reports if it had no problem with other reports being released by the COPE?"Rathnayake questioned. "We believe the current government is stalling the process as it fears that the forensic reports will reveal corruption during the Mahinda Rajapaksa era," Rathnayake pointed out. He  further noted that members of the JVP will meet the Speaker on the 21 of January and demand the release of the Central Bank treasury bond scam forensic report to Parliament. According to reports the Speaker is to announce his final decision on the reports when Parliament next meets on 21 January. The forensic audit reports were received by Parliament in December but were not examined by the COPE when the House was prorogued.
