JVP to Appeal Court against Victimisation PCoI report

25 Mar 2021

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday (24) filed a case at the Court of Appeal against the recommendations issued by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) on Political Victimisation. After filing the case, JVP Leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the PCoI has recommended the withdrawal of a large number of cases that are related to fraud, corruption, and crimes. “The PCoI recommendations have been submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers and been approved. The process of withdrawing cases should be given to the Attorney General. The PCoI recommendations are a blow to the judicial system,” MP Dissanayake said. He noted that he too had been named as a respondent in some of the cases. “When looking at the way the evidence was heard in this Commission and the manner in which I was made a respondent, it shows that the Commission has abused its power against the law and the judiciary,” he claimed. The three-member PCoI consisting of retired Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne, retired Court of Appeal Judge Daya Chandrasiri Jayatilake, and retired Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandra Fernando was appointed by the President in January 2020 to inquire into the alleged incidents of political victimisation that had allegedly occurred from 8 January 2015 to 16 November 2019, following investigations conducted by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Special Investigation Unit of the Police. The Commission had investigated 1,971 complaints, including cases of politically victimised public officers during the aforementioned period. The final report of the PCoI was handed over to the President on 8 December 2020 by Retired Supreme Court Judge Upali Abeyratne, the Chairman of the PCoI.
