JVP warns against intimidating protestors

By Buddhika Samaraweera   Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday (5) said that if President Gotabaya Rajapaksa hopes to suppress public opposition to the current Government by threatening those who engage in protests, it is a mere pipe dream. He said this referring to recent reports that the Police have commenced investigations to arrest five suspects including former JVP Provincial Councillor Samantha Vidyaratna and All Island Farmers’ Federation (ACFF) National Organiser Namal Karunaratne for staging a protest in alleged violation of the Covid-19 health guidelines. Dissanayake said that protests could be stopped only by providing solutions to the serious problems faced by the people, in particular, the farmers, fishermen, and university students. “If the Government tries to quell the protests by intimidating the protesters and those who lead them, they will fail,” he claimed, addressing a media briefing held at the JVP headquarters in Battaramulla yesterday. The Police had on 3 July arrested five suspects for staging a protest in Boralanda, Bandarawela and the suspects were produced before the Welimada Magistrate’s Court, after which they were enlarged on a count of Rs. 100,000 personal bail per each suspect. The Police had also made a request to arrest several more suspects, but the court had noted that an order was not necessary for suspects to be arrested. Accordingly, the Police have launched an investigation to arrest five more suspects including Vidyaratna and Karunaratne. Dissanayake further said that protests are being organised by farmers, university students, fishermen, and many others due to the failure of the present Government to fulfill their demands. “Due to the lack of inputs for agriculture, today, the farmlands have become a centre of protests. The Government decided to focus on organic fertilisers. We are not against it, but they should be provided to the farmers without any shortage. Given the Government’s failure to do so, the only source of income for the farming community today is lost and they are in a desperate situation,” he added. He emphasised that the JVP and the AIFF would not hesitate to provide leadership to all, including the protesting farmers, due to the issues that they are currently facing. “It is our responsibility as a political party to intervene to win the demands of the oppressed people,” he added. When contacted by The Morning, Karunaratne said that he had been informed to report to the Bogahakumbura Police tomorrow (7) to record a statement. The protest in question was held on 1 July, demanding a solution to the fertiliser shortage faced by the farming community in the area.
