Minister of  Highways and Road Development and Petroleum Resources Development Kabir Hashim today resigned from his ministerial portfolio and the Chairmanship of the United National Party . Hashim announced this decision on his official Facebook page a short-while ago. "It has been an honour to stand by Hon. Sajith Premadasa from his nominations through to election day. I will continue to stand by my leader who has proved himself beyond all obstacles and has been an example to us all politicians," Hashim said. Hashim further requested the President-elect Gotabaya Rajapaksa to ensure a peaceful post-election environment for all citizens of our country. Sajith Premadasa who was defeated by Rajapaksa at the presidential polls said he will resign from the post of Deputy Leader of the UNP. Meanwhile, State Minister for Defence and Mass Media Ruwan Wijewardena, Minister of Digital Infrastructure and IT Ajith P Perera, Minister of Development and International trade Malik Samarawickrama, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Sports Minister Harin Fernando resigned from their respective portfolios today. Fernando taking to his twitter handle said he will also resign from all positions of the UNP. Samaraweera said he will retire from active politics at the end of the parliamentary term.
