19 May 2019

Minister of Highways, Road Development, and Petroleum Resources Development Kabir Hashim has sought extra security in Mawanella. The Sunday Morning learnt the Minister was concerned that only around 10 police Special Task Force (STF) personnel were stationed in Mawanella. In a letter addressed to the State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardena, Minister Hashim wrote that a recent social media post shared by a monk, Ven. Medirgiriye Punya Sara Thera would propagate violence in the Mawanella electorate. Hashim further noted that he has been informed that the Thera had been propagating similar messages that could be interpreted as hate speech to the trustees (Dayaka Sabhawa) and audiences at a number of temples in the locality. Hashim, in the letter, sought the State Defence Minister's support and immediate action to strengthen the security by increasing the presence of military forces in Mawanella and the surrounding vulnerable areas of the Kegalle District in anticipation of possible unrest.
