  • Embilipitiya MC orders arrest of suspects
The Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court (MC), on Wednesday (9), ordered that the suspects connected to the death of a former inmate at the Kadurugasara Open Prison Complex named H. Lalith Chaminda, be arrested, as the second post-mortem report has determined that the death was not natural.  Chaminda, a resident of Matara, had been sentenced to four years of imprisonment in March 2021 over the theft of Rs. 10,000. He passed away on 14 January 2022, with prison officials claiming that it was due to a heart attack he had suffered after being beaten up by villagers when he had escaped the Prison Complex on 13 January.  However, the Committee for Protecting the Rights of Prisoners (CPRP), which appeared on behalf of the aggrieved party, told The Morning yesterday (10) that the second post-mortem report has shown that Chaminda had suffered internal injuries and internal bleeding. Thus, the Embilipitiya MC has ordered that the suspects connected to the death be arrested.  In January, Chaminda’s daughter claimed that certain prison officials had allowed her father to call her, in exchange for large amounts of money. She claimed that the person at the end of the line of one of the numbers her father had called from had asked her as to whether he can “call her in the night”.  She added that when her father had been made aware of this incident, he had been very angry, followed by a phone call on 10 January, where he had sounded worried and had told her that he may not be able to see her again.  Furthermore, the daughter said that she had been initially informed on 13 January that her father had escaped prison. However, on 14 January, different prison officials had said different things to her about the status of her father, with one official having said that her father had been found and arrested, whilst another had said that he was not found, even at 10 a.m. on the day. Three jailors have been interdicted in connection with the incident.
