Kandy Perahera elephant loses cool

23 Aug 2021

Video footage has emerged on social media which depicts an elephant participating in the Kandy Perahera straying from its calm and collected nature. It has been reported that the particular elephant depicted in the video footage was carrying the casket of the Kataragama Devalaya while the final Randoli Perahera was in progress last night. Some accounts detail that four more elephants also lost their cool moments before they were to join the procession. The situation was soon brought under control by the mahouts and the Perahera resumed shortly after. After the emergence of this footage, several animal rights activists and concerned members of the public took to social media to express their sentiments. One particular animal rights group stated that “Perahera processions of Sri Lanka are considered the cruelest in the world since elephants are terrified of fire and noise and are forced to walk amidst such conditions.”
