Kandy tremors report tomorrow

06 Sep 2020

By Sarah Hannan The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) is finalising the report that would be published tomorrow (7) over the recent seismic activity that was reported on two separate days in the vicinity of the Victoria Reservoir, The Sunday Morning learnt. Engineers at the Victoria Reservoir noted that their control centre operators are constantly monitoring the dam’s water levels and pressure levels, and when the first seismic activity was recorded, an alert was generated. “The highest seismic activity that was ever recorded in the area a few years back was at 1 on the seismometer located at the reservoir and it did not have any impact on the dam structure. This time, the highest recorded activity was marked at 0.006 from the left bank of the reservoir canal,” GSMB Senior Director and geologist Udaya De Silva told The Sunday Morning. Earlier in the week, it was widely speculated that the cause was the quarry mining of limestones in Ambakotte in the Rajawella area that is located on the left bank of the reservoir canal where the seismic activity was recorded. Dolomite Manufacturers’ Union Spokesperson U.D. Dharmasinghe, speaking to the regional reporters of Kundasale, said: “The mining at the limestone quarry is done between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. according to the permits that have been issued to us. The seismic activity that was felt on 29 August had occurred at 8.30 p.m. and the second seismic activity was recorded on 2 September at 6.45 a.m. Therefore, we don’t think the limestone mining was connected with the seismic activity.”
