24 Feb 2019

By Skandha Gunasekara Former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda is expected to be arrested soon, senior police sources told The Sunday Morning. The former Navy Chief is to be arrested over his alleged involvement in the botched abductions of 11 youths between 2008 and 2009. According to sources at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), officers of the CID had visited his residence in Kirulapone on 21 and 22 February, but Karannagoda was missing at the time, giving rise to speculation that he may be on the run. The former Admiral is accused of conspiring to commit offences under Sections 296 and 338 of the Penal Code. He is also accused under Sections 199 and 200 of failing to inform the Police regarding a crime and providing misleading information, respectively. CID officers have uncovered details of how navy personnel directly linked to Karannagoda had carried out a lucrative operation abducting children of wealthy business families and killing them after extorting money from these families. Last year, former Navy Lieutenant Commander Chandana Hettiarachchi aka. Navy Sampath was among the key suspects arrested over the abduction of the 11 youth. On Friday, another naval officer was arrested over the incident. Thus far, 12 Navy officers have been arrested in connection with the case. The 11 youth were abducted in Colombo and its suburbs between 2008 and 2009.
