Speaker Karu Jayasuriya in a first time statement after the presidential elections says he recognizes Ranil Wikramasignhe as the Leader of the Opposition.
Jayasuriya taking to his twitter account today said the Leader of the National Front for Good Governance (NFGG) has been recognized as Leader of the Opposition in line with established Parliamentary traditions.
The Speaker added that it is best that a party’s internal disputes are settled from within.
Last week General Secretary of the United National Party Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had nominated Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe’s name for the position of Opposition Leader through a letter addressed to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
Meanwhile, another letter signed by 40 UNP parliamentarians was submitted to the Speaker requesting Sajith Premadasa to be appointed as Opposition Leader.
Recognition of the Leader of the UNFGG as the Leader of the Opposition was done upholding established Parliamentary traditions that should not be violated. While I empathize with the challengers too, it is best that a party’s internal disputes are settled from within.
