Kataragama PS Chair and VC hospitalised after fight between duo

BY Dinitha Rathnayake Kataragama Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) Chairman Chanaka Amila Rangana and its Vice Chairman (VC) D.V. Shantha were hospitalised due to injuries sustained following an altercation that broke out between the duo. Speaking to The Morning, Rangana claimed that Shantha had attempted to assault him. “While I was walking on the road, Shantha came in a three-wheeler and tried to assault me, at which point, I also hit him. Everything was recorded on closed-circuit television cameras. Myself and another person were admitted to the District Hospital, Kataragama,” he said. Both Rangana and Shantha sustained injuries and are currently being treated at the District Hospital, Kataragama, and the Debarawewa Base Hospital, respectively. Police have recorded statements in connection with the matter, and further investigations are being carried out by the Kataragama Police. Previously, Rangana and two others were remanded till 2 May 2018, after they surrendered to the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court over the attack on the Kataragama Police Station on 20 January 2018. It was also revealed during The Morning’s investigation into a racket involving the trafficking, smuggling, and sale of narcotic drugs that Rangana was also involved with extortionists at the Kataragama Temple. When queried about his relationship with the said extortionists however, he denied any such connection.
