Katunayake civil unions stage protest against militarization of free trade zone.

A joint protest action was held in Averiwatta area in Katunayake in front of the police station condemning the arbitrary arrest of workers in Katunayake and the militarization of the free trade zones. The protest was staged yesterday (03), and Police Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa stated that about 75 workers and religious clerics attended the protest. "There was about 75 protesters including religious clerics. The protest went on for about an hour. People held placards and were demanding mostly for the arrest of politicians who instigated the May 9th violence," said Thalduwa. Unions, Civil Society Organisations and free trade zone workers from Katunayake, along with religious leaders joined the protest. The protesters also demanded that the government hold those accountable for stealing the workers' wealth.
