Khettarama being refurbished; no night games in Colombo this time – SLC

19 Feb 2020

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Wednesday (19) said they didn’t schedule any game for the touring West Indies this time because the main Colombo Stadium, Khettarama or R. Premadasa, is under refurbishment. “There are three ODIs which have been scheduled. Two will be played as day-night games (at Hambantota and Pallekele). And the two T20 games also will be played under lights (at Pallekele). As per our contractual obligations, we can even schedule a day game as long as we’re playing that during the weekend,” said SLC CEO Ashely De Silva when the Captains and Coaches of the two teams, Sri Lanka and West Indies, med the media for the first time at Shangri La, Colombo on Wednesday. “We don’t play any game under lights this time in Colombo because, unfortunately, it is under construction. It’s being refurbished. That’s why we couldn’t schedule any game at Khettarama. That’s the reason why we didn’t schedule any game in Colombo,” De Silva further added. NDB is sponsoring the two series this time between Sri Lanka and West Indies. This is rare occasion when Sri Lanka skip a day-nighter at Khettarama in a bilateral or tournament limited-over series. The venue is the centre of attraction in local cricket. A column of one of the two-storied stands of the venue has shown cracks and it is also being repaired along with the pitches, it was also reported. Experts have advised the organisers not to hold matches until the damage is repaired, it was also said. Schedule: Sat, 22 Feb: First ODI series at SSC (from 10 a.m.) Wed, 26 Feb: 2nd ODI (D/N) at Hambantota (from 2.30 p.m.) Sun, 1 March: 3rd ODI (D/N) at Pallekela (from 2.30 p.m.) Wed, 4 March: 1st T20I (N) at Pallekela (from 7 p.m.) Fri, 6 March: 2nd T20I (N) at Pallekela (from 7 p.m.)
