Kids no more susceptible to 3rd wave than to first two

25 May 2021

By Pamodi Waravita   There has been no significant increase in the percentage of children getting infected with the Covid-19 virus during the third wave as compared to the first two waves, according to Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH). “The total number of children falling ill due to the virus has increased since the numbers reported Island-wide have risen. However, there is no significant increase in the percentage of children being infected during the third wave,” LRH Director Dr. G. Wijesuriya told The Morning yesterday (24). Dr. Wijesuriya also said that they have not observed serious symptoms in children with Covid-19 during this third wave. However, LRH Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera had reportedly said last week that since more children are being infected due to the Covid-19 virus, all those over the age of 12 years must be considered for vaccination. As of April, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stressed that there is not enough evidence to recommend that children be vaccinated against Covid-19. However, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently expanded the emergency use authorisation for the anti-Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine to include children aged between 12-15 years.
