Kindness will always triumph over evil

By Kayla Collett The BFG, which stands for “big friendly giant”, is an amazing book by famous children’s author Roald Dahl and beautifully illustrated by Quentin Blake. The book teaches people about kindness and friendliness despite how mean other people can be to you. The book has even been recreated on film, with the movie being made really well. However, it is certainly no match to the real thing; by reading the book, your imagination is set free and you get to picture the beautiful environment by yourself without any restrictions – it’s up to your own imagination of what the characters and surroundings in the book look like, which is what makes this book extra special.   What it’s about  Sophie is a 10-year-old orphan girl who lives in an orphanage in London, England. She usually reads books until late at night because she finds it diffi cult to sleep. On this particular night, she was up at three in the morning when she saw a giant outside her window walking down the street towards her. She tries to hide, but he finds her, captures her, and takes her to a place called the “Giant Country”. He then explains that he kidnapped her because she saw him and doesn’t trust that she won’t tell anyone about the existence of giants in the world. He also advises her not to step out of his home because there are nine other scary giants that inhabit the Giant Country, who are much bigger than the BFG and like the flavour of children. How terrifying! Then, the Fleshlumpeater, a horrifying giant, enters the BFG’s house and smells Sophie, nearly finding and eating her. Sophie then convinces the BFG to take her to the Dream Country where he goes and catches dreams, but as they exit, the Bloodbottler is accidentally awakened by the BFG who then wakes up all the other scary giants. The giants then bully and torment the BFG by throwing him around as if he was a football and roll him down a hill in a garbage truck. The two then manage to escape during a thunderstorm, which makes the scary giants go back to their caves. However, the Fleshlumpeater and the Bloodbottler fi nd Sophie’s blanket, which she accidentally dropped, and plan to find and catch her. Sophie then tells the BFG not to let other people bully him the way he was bullied before.   The two of them arrive in the Dream Country and are able to catch some dreams. They then head to London to give good dreams to children who are sleeping that night. Just then,Sophie realises she had lost her blanket. The BFG becomes scared that the other flesh-eating giants will fi nd Sophie and eat her once they return to the Giant Country, and as a result, she wakes up outside her orphanage where he tells her that the last child he took back to his home and cared for was eaten by the evil giants, so he explains that he doesn’t want to risk losing Sophie too. However, Sophie throws herself out of her orphanage window, hoping that the BFG will catch her again and he does. When they return to the BFG’s home in the Giant Country, the giants barge in looking for Sophie, but Sophie somehow avoids being caught and the angry BFG stands up against the horribly evil giants and scare them away from his house using a hot fi re iron. Sophie is still hidden and discovers a portrait of Queen Victoria on the bed of the child that used to live with the BFG before he was taken away by the Fleshlumpeater’s group. She then comes up with a plan to create a nightmare and then gives it to Elizabeth II, the Queen of the UK, which includes the evil giants eating children in England, the British Army fighting the giants, and then Sophie sitting on her windowsill. Then, the pair set off to go to Buckingham Palace where Elizabeth II wakes up from her nightmare and her and her maid find Sophie on the windowsill – exactly the same as her nightmare – with the BFG outside the palace. The pair attempts to convince the people in the palace that the man-eating giants are real and need to be prevented from eating more of Elizabeth II’s child subjects, which the Queen believes to be true and hence sends the British Army off to fight the evil giants in the Giant Country. The helicopters manage to capture the giants and trap them in a place where they cannot eat anything or anyone else except for snozzcumbers (a disgusting vegetable which they hate with apassion).   My favourite part of the book  Sophie, in the final part of the book, lives in the palace where she teaches the BFG how to read and write, and it is revealed to the reader that the BFG himself was the one writing the book. This was a lovely conclusion to the book, teaching you that kindness will always triumph over evil.   Why I LOVE this book I love this book because it teaches us to be kind even though there are always going to be mean people around us. The BFG is an extremely kindhearted giant, contrary to what Sophie thinks. Even though the BFG is surrounded by mean and scary giants in the Giant country, he still protects Sophie from the other horrible giants and has never become nasty or spiteful himself. This teaches us a great life lesson – even though people might be mean to you, you should never let them make you a foul and unkind person. This book shows you how you should treat other people with warmth and aff ection and teaches  you a great life lesson
