A doctor attached to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital was arrested over suspicions over his earnings and assets.
Police Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara, speaking to The Sunday Morning, said that 42-year-old Dr. Seigu Siyabdeen Mohamed Shafi was taken into custody based on information received by the Kurunegala Police.
The suspect was later transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday (25) for further questioning.
He further added that the Kurunegala Police Division was conducting investigations into the means of his income.
Additionally, there had also been suspicions that the doctor had allegedly been administering substances that could sterilise patients as well.
SP Gunasekara said that currently no statements or formal complaints had been received by the Kurunegala Police; however, the Police were expecting a formal complaint over the next few days.
Dr. Navin Soysa, a member of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA), speaking to The Sunday Morning said that the GMOA was initially unaware of the incident and the arrest.
“We too were made aware only when we noticed an article in a newspaper, where the paper had requested other GMOA doctors to come forward with information about this individual.”
The doctor added that since their learning of this new situation, the GMOA had appointed a committee to gather more information on Dr. Shafi.
“We have also requested other members of the GMOA to provide any information that they might have of Dr. Shafi to the committee,” he said.
Dr. Soysa reiterated that if the doctor had practised any form of medical procedure to dishonour the Hippocratic Oath, no matter his ethnicity, creed, religion, or even hometown, the practitioner’s license will be cancelled.
He said that the committee which was appointed to look into this incident will be submitting their recommendations to the panel this week.
