Kuttiarachchi denies SJB allegations over Co-op Society/Bank

23 Feb 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake  Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Thissa Kuttiarachchi refuted all misappropriation allegations related to the Capital Co-operative Bank, including using a double cab belonging to the same bank as his personal vehicle. Speaking to The Morning, he said that the Capital Co-operative Society Ltd. was initiated by himself with the help of his uncle in 2002.  “We established our Society under the Co-operative Societies Law, No. 5 of 1972 to help unemployed students. According to the Law, we are capable of establishing a bank as the financial section of the Society. I have not used any vehicle belonging to this bank. I may have travelled in vehicles belonging to the bank, but not on a personal level,” he stated. According to Kuttiarachchi, around 500,000 customers are working with the Capital Co-operative Bank at the moment. Meanwhile, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Chaminda Wijesiri, raising a point of order in the Parliament recently, said that it was better if Kuttiarachchi was telling the truth, but that the Speaker of the Parliament should not permit the latter to tell lies, taking cover behind Parliamentary privilege. “Kuttiarachchi was using a double cab belonging to the bank as his personal vehicle and came to the Parliament in the same vehicle. The Speaker could ascertain the truth by checking the ownership of the vehicle,” Wijesiri claimed. Speaking to The Morning, Wijesiri alleged that Kuttiarachchi was using vehicles belonging to the bank till January this year and noted that it is illegal to use State properties for personal use. He also alleged that the establishment of the said bank is also illegal.
